1 Day Mount Sabyinyo Hiking Safari

1 Day Mount Sabyinyo Hiking Safari

This 1 day Mount Sabyinyo hiking safari in Rwanda allows you the opportunity to hike the oldest mountain range in the Virunga Massif. Mount Sabyinyo volcano is shared by three countries; Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The name Sabyinyo is derived from the Kinyarwanda word “iryinyo,” which means teeth. The volcano is known locally as “old man’s teeth” because its serrated top resembles the spaced teeth in an old man’s gum line, as opposed to the perfect conical summits of the nearby volcanoes in this range.

Standing 3645m above sea level, this Volcano is known to be home to diverse biodiversity such as golden monkeys, “Cercopithecus Kandt,” the oldest monkey species found in the Volcanoes National Park at Mount Sabyinyo; buffalo and elephants; but most importantly, it provides a home to various gorilla families, primarily the Agashya, Hirwa, Muhoza, and Sabyinyo gorilla groups.

Detailed Itinerary for 1 Day Mount Sabyinyo Hiking Safari

Set off from Kigali at 4am and drive at least 3 hours to Volcanoes National Park headquarters for registration and briefing that starts at 7am. Once you have been briefed by the park head ranger, you will be placed in a group and assigned a guide and ranger. Begin your ascent up Mount Sabyinyo. Given its physical attributes, the Sabyinyo Volcano rising to summit 1 trail is the most straightforward hiking route in Volcanoes National Park.
Most hikers can finish the trek in six hours, which includes two hours for the descent and four hours for the ascent to the top. In addition to offering hikers some thrill, the narrow ridge offers breathtaking vistas of the Gahinga and Muhabura and tantalizing peeks of Sabyinyo’s top ridges.

You might see or hear the singing of many bird species, such as the Speckled Mousebird, Mountain Greenbul, and Ruwenzori’s Turaco, as you ascend to the summit. Mammals including elephants, buffaloes, and bushbucks, as well as primates like golden monkeys, may also be heard or observed. On top of the mountain, you will be captivated by a breathtaking view of the countryside, the oldest and gigantesque rocks of the ravines that stretch from the top to the bottom, and the flora that covers the trail to the summit.
