Detailed Itinerary for 9 Days Akagera and Volcanoes Safari
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
You will be picked up from Kigali International Airport upon your arrival. (Please let us know which flight you will be arriving on). Your driver will then transfer you to your hotel in Kigali for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Kigali City Tour
Have your breakfast at your hotel and meet up with your driver guide. Today you will be exploring Kigali city where you will visit places like; Kigali genocide memorial center, Inema Arts center, Nyamirambo women’s Centre, and Caplaki craft village among others. In case you have time, you can do an optional visit to the King’s palace in Nyanza which is a 2 hours’ drive from Kigali city and will give you the opportunity to see the famous Inyambo cattle.
Day 3: Transfer to Akagera national park and Ihema Boat Cruise.
You will be met by your driver guide at your agreed location in Kigali to transfer to Akagera national park where you will arrive in time to embark on the late afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema where you will see game like hippopotamuses, Crocodiles and many bird species that live around the lake and the surrounding swamps. Dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Full Day Game Drive (Northern Akagera)
After breakfast, head out for a full day of game viewing. Today you will be exploring the northern part of Akagera National Park which is popular for its huge numbers of wildlife. Look out for wildlife like lions, leopard, elephants, zebras, antelopes, rhinos and so many more. Lunch and dinner will be served at your lodge.
Day 5: Early morning game drive and transfer to Volcanoes.
Rise up early and go for a game drive with great anticipation of seeing the different animals which rise early to graze and predators looking for their early morning kill. After the game drive, return to connect with your driver guide to embark on your transfer to Volcanoes National Park with lunch en route to the park. Arrive at the park in the late afternoon and check-in at your hotel/lodge. Dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Gorilla trekking and Iby’iwacu Village Tour
Early in the morning after breakfast and a briefing from the RDB officials, set off for the gorilla trekking. This experience of gorilla trekking is a once in a life time adventure. The rangers will lead you deep into the forest in search of the Gorillas.
You will move up and down the rugged terrain until you finally meet these harmonious creatures whose company you will cherish for 1 hour. The activity in Rwanda can take 3-5 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas. In the afternoon you will head out for a cultural tour to Ibyi’wacu village for a cultural experience with a resident local guide. Visit the King’s palace and learn more about the Rwandan culture through dance and singing performances from the local intore dance troupe. Return for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Golden monkey Trek
Wake up to a good breakfast in the misty volcanoes forest and drive to the park headquarters where you will be briefed. After your briefing will embark on a guided trek in search for golden monkeys in the forest and this can take between 3-6 hours or more depending on their location. Once you have located a group, you will be given an hour with the primates and then drive back to your lodge for lunch and relax for the rest of your evening. Later have dinner and overnight stay at your lodge.
Day 8: Hike Mount Bisoke
Have breakfast early in the morning and drive to the park’s briefing point. After your registration and briefing, you will begin your ascent on Mount Bisoke taking about 2-3 hours depending on your hiking pace. Once you get to the summit of the mountain, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the park, a large caldera lake and other mountain peaks within the Virunga Massif. Have your packed lunch and later descend the mountain and head back to base where you will find your driver waiting for you. Dinner and overnight stay at your lodge.
Day 9: Transfer Back to Kigali
After having your breakfast, check out of your lodge and head back to Kigali with en-route lunch. You will be dropped off at your hotel or at the airport for your onward flight.
