History of Rusumo Falls in Rwanda.

Although the waterfall may appear modest in comparison to the other aquatic wonders on the continent, it has played an important role in Rwanda’s history.

The falls served as the first welcome committee for Europeans who arrived in Rwanda in 1984, despite the fact that the area had been a part of German East Africa since 1885, and no European had visited the region prior to 1984. The falls also served as an access route for Belgians during their occupation of the nation during World War I.

The river, however, earned international prominence during the events of the 1994 Rwanda genocide, since it drains water from all parts of Rwanda except the extreme west, causing victims from the murder to be transported by the river. Despite that sad tragedy, the falls are currently a popular tourist destination, as well as a source of renewable energy thanks to the regional Rusumo falls hydropower plant.

The Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project is a hydroelectric project managed by the governments of the Republic of Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania through a jointly owned Rusumo Power Company. A Tripartite Agreement was signed on February 16, 2012, by the three nations to begin collaborative development.

The project is located at Rusumo Falls, near the Rwanda-Tanzania border on the Kagera River, while the power generation facilities are on the south bank of the Kagera River in Tanzania. In Rwanda, the substation is located on the northern bank of the river.

Cool, wet air rises from below, mingling with the sounds of birds, tree frogs, and insects. It stands around 17 metres tall and is more spectacular for the power with which it shoots through a tight opening into a gorgeous amphitheater bordered with fluttering fronds of ferns, flowers, and lianas, all of which thrive in the autumn mist zone.

On bright days, there are caverns in the overhanging cliffs and a rainbow in the spray. The bottom of the 13 square kilometer Kamiranzovu Marsh, which flows over the wall of this water-carved canyon, is three kilometres to the east and 100 metres higher in elevation.
