Kidepo national park

Kidepo national park is located in Kabong district northern Uganda.  It’s the most isolated national park and still stands as the virgin land of tourism everyone would wish to visit as best view of the wildlife. It is situated around 1422sqkms and about 700km by road from Kampala to the park.

Moroto being the nearest town it has also improved tourism being the nearest town around the park. It was gazetted in 1962 and currently it hosts over 75 mammals and 450 birds.

The park can also be accessed by road which takes around about 12hours drive from Kampala, the tourists can also access the park by air transport from kajjasi to Lomeji airstrip.

Kidepo was named after the magnificent kidepo river, and this river was frequented by the people of Karamonja travelling to collect the palm fruits which lies on the banks of the river.

ATTRACTIONS IN KIDEPO VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

Since the national park is in the semi arid areas, it has nice attractions which include; Narus Valley, animals, Kidepo valley and Kanangorok Hot springs and birds.

ANIMALS

The park has got variety of the animals since its located in virgin areas with good weather conditions from the valleys and mountains, the animals include; African elephant,lions,crocodile, cheetah, buffalo among others.

BIRDS IN KIDEPO

With over 475 bird species, Kidepo valley national park has the second-highest population of Ugandan protected birds. Kidepo national park has more than 56 birds Raptor species. Others common birds include; Dark chanting, vulture, common ostrich, secretary birds.

 NARUS VALLEY

The word Narus means ‘muddy’ in karamonj. Narus valley is a rolling, grassland plain enclosed by distant mountains. It’s the only reliable water source where herds of 20 to 30  elephants come to drink water in the morning before they distant themselves for grazing in the afternoon.

MOUNT MORUNGOLE

Mount morungole (also known as the IK land)  stands at 2750m on the eastern border of kidepo valley national park.it holds the stronghold of the Uganda’s last population of around 10000 IK people who holds the mountains. This region can be exposed to foot with rangers.
